I am Karen Mogendorff, a Dutch anthropologist, communication scientist and discursive psychologist. This page provides information about my activities and publications. Publications are in Dutch or English. There are English abstracts of most Dutch publications. Who am I? I am a cultural anthropologist and a communication scientist. With scientific articles and other writings I hope to offer readers alternative ways of looking and thinking about so-called ordinary social phenomena. I have a special interest in: - adaptability or resilience of 'vulnerable' citizens and (semi) public organisations - physical and social barriers and how to counter them - constructions and (strategic) use of expert and experience based knowledge in talk-in-interaction - the use of combinations of qualitative methodology such as forms of ethnography, action research and interaction analysis
Projects Projects I have been working on at universities, (disability) advocacy organizations, knowledge institutions or national or local government organizations include: - expert-'lay' communication: dynamics in plant scientists' talk with non-experts - Accessibility of the built environment, in particular university buildings - role change in public client organizations in the built environment - Dyslexia in higher education - Employment and Disability: Individual Placement and Support, Supported Employment, collaboration between local businesses, care organizations and municipalities - Good practices in social participation of citizens with intellectual disabilities or mental illnesses - Quality of life of people with learning disabilities, social interaction between disabled and non-disabled people and the self-image of young adults with disabilities
